Fox body mustang steering rack for RHD conversion in oz?

Postby vr4_killah » Thu Jul 22, 2010 1:12 am

Hi all,

Bit of a different problem that I have currently...

I own a 1983 model mazda rx7. There is a rack and pinion conversion kit for this car available from the states (respeed).
It is to suit a LHD rx7. However, their kit uses a 'fox body mustang steering rack' because it is so common over there.

I'm wondering what rack you guys have used in these cars (if they are over here?) in a RHD conversion?
I am able to use their LHD kit I just need to source my own rack...
I need a supplier/email/phone number if possible?

Cheers!

Hi vr4-killah.
Buying a mounting kit only would be pretty useless in my opinion ,if you consider that this kit would have bracketry to suit a particular rack.
If you are determined to go the rack route ,I would suggest a search of the wreckers to find a suitable unit, your critical dimension is the pivots for the steering arms. A wider rack can be narrowed easily enough[manual racks].
The pivots need to align with your suspension control arm pivots to prevent "bump steer".
The adaption to the column via a uni coupling is another item of research .
Brackets can be fabricated to suit your chosen rack.
Plenty of research and measuring, anything can be done.
Frank.
